Skills First RPL Assessment Resources

Skills First RPL resources have been developed as part of the Queensland Skills Plan in order to create industry approved, work-based recognition of prior learning tools.

These resources offer an alternative to the portfolios that candidates supply in order to achieve RPL. Such portfolios provide limited opportunities for candidates to demonstrate competence and lack the flexibility to meet client needs.

Skills First RPL resources assist assessors and candidates to participate more fully in RPL by emphasising conversations and demonstrations as valid evidence gathering.

These assessment resources, while an important safety net, are only one part of the potential solution and can be adapted. Assessors themselves need to be skilled, confident and flexible enough to accommodate diversity in candidates while ensuring assessment standards are met.

These resources are provided at no cost to assist the sector with the ongoing improvement of RPL assessment resource development.

Each kit comprises:

Section A - Assessor Information
Contains advice for assessors, the competencies contained in the resource; an overview of the recognition process and the steps undertaken in the recognition of prior learning process.
Section B - Candidate Information and Application Forms
Offers simple and supportive information for candidates to assist them in preparing for the assessment process, including a self-assessment questionnaire.
Section C - Competency Conversation
Use this section to determine and record candidate competence via a competency conversation. These questions guide your conversation with the applicant and assist in your assessment of their competence.
Section D - Practical Assessment and Observation Recording Sheets
Assists the assessor to document practical demonstrations of the candidate's skills.
Section E - Resources for Assessment Tasks
Contains resources for the assessment tasks.
Section F - Third Party Verification
Provides forms for the candidate's referees to confirm skills assessed.
Section G - Assessment Tables
Matrix showing the alignment of Training Package requirements to questions and practical tasks.

Skills first assessor kits are available from the Department of Education, Training and the Arts website
